The New Year

I’ve always loved the idea of new year. A new start, a re-set, a chance to really think about the habits you want to take into the new year and what it is you’d like to change or adjust.

I know this year I would like to try and read more. I used to love to read but the habit to mindlessly scroll my phone instead is something I’d like to try and reduce.

I’d also like to try and be more creative. This is not something that is very easy to fit in to a busy life but taking the time to write, draw, knit, sew, paint, crochet, quilt, make pots or prints, take photographs, whatever it may be, is something I’d like to try to do more of. I know this won’t happen without a conscious effort.

Lastly I’d like to try and focus on strengthening both my mind and my body. I tried meditation this year but I didn’t truely commit to it. I’d like to do more yoga and also to re-start running which I found so helpful during the first lockdown but which got a bit pushed out once the daily goings on of real life returned.

As always I’m going to try and pay attention to the beauty of the natural world, the changing of the seasons and the beauty to be found in the smallest things as well as those closest to home. I love a New Year’s Day walk and the promise of the first signs of spring to come in the next few weeks. The evenings are getting lighter but it’s entirely acceptable to enjoy the cosines of January and February without pressure or obligation. It can also often snow which we all love.

I suppose there’s a promise to the new year that I can’t help but find inspiring and whether you set goals, make resolutions or just treat it as any other day I hope the new year is a safe and happy one for us all.
